Special needs dentistry

Down syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21 that causes problems with the way the body and brain develop.

Children and adults with Down syndrome have compromised immune system, various degrees of intellectual impairment and severe delay in language development and higher incidence of epilepsy, diabetes, leukemia, and hypothyroidism.

Dental manifestations of Down Syndrome

  • Delayed eruption/Irregular eruption pattern
  • Relatively small palate
  • Relatively large tongue
  • Agenesis of teeth (teeth that do not form)
  • Conical, smaller teeth with shorter roots
  • Over-retained baby (primary teeth)
  • Impacted teeth
  • Bruxism (grinding or clenching teeth)
  • Erosion of enamel
  • Periodontal (gum) disease

Children and adults with Down Syndrome has unique dental health needs. They need the care of a dentist trained in dentistry for special needs children and adults.
